•	Textile and fashion industry essential to daily life and must be sustainable
•	CEO calls for a newly elected government to rethink policy and funding
•	Market intervention from election result is overdue and welcomed

The Council of Textile and Fashion Industries of Australia (TFIA) Chief Executive, Richard Evans says that a new era for the textile and fashion industry awaits it after this week of intense politics and economic news. Evans suggests with political certainty, low interest rates and an economy showing signs of recovery then consumers will re-enter the market.

“This week will be a fascinating period for the industry,” Evans said. “Retail trade figures are out, the Reserve Bank meets to discuss interest rates, job figures are due, and we have a federal election. This all means we may have a positive market intervention and consumers will begin to come back before Christmas.”

“We believe consumers will welcome the end to political uncertainty this weekend and begin to re-enter the market,” Evans said. “Our expectation is the August interest rate cut will begin to impact consumers from October, and coupled with the end of uncertainty from a minority government, consumers will begin to loosen their spending habits.”

“No matter the result on Saturday, there is one thing of which we can be certain … there will be no minority government and that is the result the industry wants,” Evans said. “We don’t expect retail sales to have changed significantly in July because consumers have closed their wallets and purses; and whilst we may see an increase in unemployment in some markets, we don’t expect the Reserve Bank to cut rates further from record lows. But, with a clear result on Saturday, we expect consumers to be reassured and keen to come back to the market.”

“Consumers need security; they want secure jobs and they want a secure government; and they want an end to the constant news of doom and gloom from and this overly long election campaign.” Evans said.

The Textile and Fashion industry will be keen for early talks with an elected Rudd or Abbott government about the sustainability of the sector. Textiles and fashion have an impact on virtually everything we touch in our daily lives and we must begin to acknowledge its importance to, not only the economy, but society. Both Parties have released policies that are at the core of the Textile and Fashion industry needs.

“The Rudd Government has foreshadowed changes to the over regulated labour market and we will be keen to talk to them about reducing the current burden within our industry, specifically for small businesses,” Evans said. “Mr Rudd has also indicated tax incentives for our small businesses and these will be welcomed.”

“Mr Abbott has offered Strategic Growth Action Agendas which hits our industry’s policy buttons because we need a cultural change in policy development from the federal government,” Evans said. “So no matter who is successful on Saturday we see a new era for the Textile and Fashion industry.”

“Consumers drive the market and once they have political certainty, low interest rates and good economic news we expect them back in the market in November allowing much needed cash to flow through the supply chain over the next six months.” Evans said.

After noticing a distinct gap in the market for sensual products for women that incorporated high-end design with an affordable price tag, Emily Bendell realised her calling.

Based in London, BlueBella kicked off in 2006 with the mission of making every woman feel fabulous. Their size range reflects this philosophy starting at a UK dress size 6 to 26 and running from an A cup to G cup. Their core offering is elegant sensual styles that are also wearable, designing with `real women in mind’.

Bluebella will make its official debut into the Australian market at Fashion Exposed trade event this weekend August 25-27 at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. This is the first BlueBella collection to launch outside Europe, working with Australasian distributor, The Love Group.

The theme for this collection is ‘Tales of Seduction’. It’s about sensuality and intrigue, excitement and intense pleasure, secret liaisons and delicious decadence but also of empowerment and control.

`Tales of Seduction’ is about a woman who knows her own mind, knows what she wants, and feels absolutely fabulous in getting it. She is in control. She is beautiful and feminine, but she is fierce too. She is writing her own story. She is the author of her own tales. Softly playful styles such as Tatiana and Brigitte are all about the bedroom and allow one to be soft and feminine. While provocatively erotic styles such as Lavinia and Eden feature bondage-inspired strapping, but are still beautifully wearable under any outfit. The fun is in knowing how amazing you look under your clothes…’

Don’t miss this exciting new lingerie brand and collection.

Jeannyfe Spary details her personal story from a small child with big dreams in the Philippines to launching her new label Harspa at Fashion Exposed this month

I was constantly bullied during my younger years, even when I reached high school and in my university days, because of how I dress or carry myself. These experiences left me feeling as if there was something wrong with me and I thought that’s why they acted like that towards me. So I keep myself busy inside our family home in the Philippines and spent much time drawing, playing with my toys and dolls with my sister.

I said to myself “I will not let these experiences affect my life.” So I prayed for anyone who bullied me that they will be blessed in their lives and I forgave them for whatever they did towards me, intentionally or unintentionally.

My mum usually cuts the patterns in paper and sewed clothes for me and my sister during occasions growing up, she also sewed curtains for our home. I watched her using the manual paddled SINGER sewing machine. I became very interested in what she created from a very young age. When I turned nine, my father who worked abroad sent me six mini dolls that were four inches tall and had six different hair colours. They had tiny dresses of course, so I began cutting different paper dresses and coloured them individually so I could play dress ups with it. I spent many hours doing it because I enjoyed it a lot. I didn’t find friends really but the closest people in my life are still my family.

On my mum’s side, my cousins and aunties always passed on their out grown clothes and mum was so happy because we could save a lot of money, and she would adjust them to fit my size. So I was able to see what she did to all those dresses and I’m so proud of her hard work and creativity.

I got busy making dresses for my mini dolls and used fabric instead. Then she taught me how to wear 2 inches high heels when I tuned 12 years old. Every time I came home from school, she asked me to practice how to walk straight gracefully with a chin up position, she put books on my head and instructed me to walk straight without dropping them.

When I turned 14, I designed and sewed my first plain pink blouse with piping on the edges of the fabric of my floral printed skirt. I wore them confidently at school but nobody knew that I made them. My father also sent me fabrics from the Middle East. I designed my dresses on it, then my mum sewed it and sometimes I would pay my neighbour, who is a dress maker, to do it for me too. When I saw any of my mums old clothes from when she was young, and I liked the fabric, then I would recycle it by making it into another blouse, skirt or dress. My love for wearing them never ends because I’m the only person who has it and people notice that it’s unique.

There is no university or fashion design school in the Philippines, so I took a Bachelor of Science in Tourism instead where I learned about the culture of different people and how they dress, the fabrics they use and create that are specific to their nation. This developed my eagerness to create unique clothes and express who I am.

I joined a beauty pageant contest from 18-21 years old, just to model different clothes designed by different Filipino designers on stage. But after my studies, I worked to help my sister to university and my brother to school because my father stopped working abroad. So I worked in different offices and traveled to different countries and all along I took in the different styles, and heard famous designer names. YouTube is great because I can see the styles from different designers each season around the world.

I then got married at 26 with my Australian husband. I stopped working for myself for almost 9 years to help build my husband’s painting and decorating business and take good care of our three wonderful girls.

As the days go by, I see myself in my three unique daughters, watching them grow play dress up at home. They talk about shoes, bags and dresses to wear and sometimes draw and colour them. I said to myself “it’s time for me to do what I really love to do”. This time it will be great and even better because I have my three girls who are interested too. It will be good to work together even if they are young because they are so creative. So my mind was set to do it and I told my husband “That this time I really have to do what I love to do!”.

A family friend (Neville Harris) saw my shoes and clothing designs, then after a long discussion and planning on our dining table at home, Harspa Pty Ltd (Stands for Harris & Spary) was registered on April 25, 2013. We decided to join Fashion Exposed 2013 with our few passionately-designed clothes, shoes, bags, wallets & bags from our 2014 collection range.

Fashion and design are universal. They’re also fleeting and fickle.

Working with some of the most renowned designers in the world, Cudworth Enterprises has its fingers firmly on the pulse of the global men’s fashion accessory industry.

Purveyors and wholesalers of distinctive men’s jewellery and accessories, Cudworth Enterprises offers the Australian market an expansive range of products. From sage to savage and from stainless steel to sterling silver, only three words guide them in their selection – WHAT MEN WANT

So where did it all begin? And how did they become Australia’s leading wholesaler in men’s cufflinks and jewellery?

Established in 1918, Cudworth Enterprises was a thriving business when new owners purchased it in 2002. Since then, they have continued to expand into men’s jewellery in both stainless steel and sterling silver.

In that same year, they introduced a collection of leather accessories including men’s bags & wallets. Now Cudworth has stockists all over Australia & New Zealand, France and the UK. Brands include Cudworth Collection, Stainless Steel, Hardware by Cudworth, Savage and they are also the distributors for Lanvin-Paris in neckwear and cufflinks.

Next year will mark their 35th year in the industry and they have contributed to the exciting growth in menswear over the years. Now they can easily say their range competes with international brands and they continue to evolve with their leading edge collections. This is attributed to their design aesthetic, which tends to steer away from the usual trends for something original and fresh.

Cudworth International are currently on tour promoting their 2013 jewellery and leathergood collections. This includes showcasing the range at the Bags & Accessories Fair this month.

The leather collections are usually sourced from India but they are looking into Italian leather for 2014. Stainless Steel for cufflinks and jewellery is commonplace at the Cudworth design studio but they are also working a lot more with IP Plating – a coloured plating for steel – to introduce new colours into the collections rather than raw steel.

Visit Cudworth Enterprises on stand 1720 at the Bags & Accessories Fair co-located with Fashion Exposed from 25-27 August at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

For a designer responsible in creating the iconic Melbourne label DIZINGOF, entirely without formal design training, Haim Bzezinski is surprisingly modest.

A quiet man, Bzezinski tends to shy away from fashion shows and disposable trends, choosing instead to focus on the garments themselves. It is this focus and creativity which has made Bzezinski in to one of Melbourne’s most sought after independent designers.

Born in Israel, Bzezinski and his three brothers were raised by their mother and their carpenter father. For a time the designer worked in carpentry alongside his father, a skill which he still utilizes today, both as inspiration for his work and in designing the DIZINGOF stores. At a young age Bzezinski was uninterested in fashion, instead though his feel for aesthetics and structure was evident in his first love, architecture.

It was this love of combining style with structure which developed into a natural feel for fashion. After leaving home at 21 to travel the world, Bzezinski finally settled in Melbourne, drawn to its independent fashion scene. It was here that he decided to create not buildings, but clothing as carefully designed and constructed as any modern structure.

Astonishingly self-taught, Bzezinski’s designs owe more to the city environment surrounding him than to the influence of one particular designer or teacher. But though he has excelled in his chosen field Bzezinski has not left his love of architecture behind

Designed by Bzezinski to flatter not only his range, but the surrounding area’s atmosphere, DIZINGOF boutiques are as much a reflection of Bzezinski’s innate sense of style as the clothing within them. Truly it is their designer’s background in carpentry and his appreciation of architectural style which have made DIZINGOF boutiques what they are todayture behind

DIZINGOF over the years has remained committed to utilizing not only local design, but local production. The last twelve years have confirmed that creating pieces in Australia leads to not only a better quality garment, but one which helps support local industry. For summer 2009/10, Dizingof’s newest project is taking the brand to the next level within the wholesale industry and introducing Bzezinski’s signature collections to the world.

We had a quick chat with the Dizingof designer before he showcases the current collection at Fashion Exposed from 25-27 August at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

From the mouths of babes, inspiration is born. This is exactly how Samson & Delilah was created.

Craig Missell was trying to come up with a memorable name for his new brand, something that could be used in strong marketing strategies but was also fun. It was proving a challenge, they spent months coming up with and then discounting names, until one day his 10-year-old daughter Sasha, sitting at the dinner table blurted out “how about Samson & Delilah?” and as they say `the rest is history’.

Since their launch in 2011, Samson & Delilah has consistently delivered something new to the children’s wear market. But rather than build on, they have improved on the niche market, with their predominantly natural garment line with a modern bright look.

Their collections balance the functionality and practicality of a well-made garment with the look and feel of funky children’s wear, without loosing the innocence of youth.

Not surprisingly their inspiration mostly comes from their youngest son Jules, who will only wear soft comfortable clothes. They also keep a close eye on what’s trending in the 5-year-old category, and feedback from retailers is key.

They are about to exhibit the brand at Fashion Exposed from 25-26 August at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

“Our brand has been extremely well-received through strategically chosen retailers, as we can now see by sales and more importantly re-orders, it is time to take the brand to the next level,” said Craig.

“We needed a vehicle to further showcase the Samson & Delilah brand and once we looked into the choice of exhibitions in Australia, we evaluated price, patronage etc, and it was clear that Informa Exhibitions was the obvious choice for us.”

Samson & Delilah hope to continue their crusade of developing a brand with flair for today’s little heroes.

“We tell them to go further, dream bigger and look great doing it,” he said. “We are dedicated to the brand’s quality. We invest in comfort and fashion.”

View the Samson & Delilah range on stand 4046 during Fashion Exposed from 25-27 August at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

It all began when a small town, Australian girl decided to start making eco-friendly bamboo clothing for real women.

After 15 years in the mainsteam retail fashion business, Anna Walsh decided she wanted to design fashion that not only looked great, but also helped the planet. It was then she discovered that you could make clothes out of bamboo!

With a creative focus, and design nous she set about fusing the eco-friendly fabric into her own fashion line, Body Peace.

Soft stretchy fabric made from natural bamboo fiber is the environmentally-friendly choice for leisurewear, travel, and yoga. Bamboo is a sustainable crop which grows at a very rapid rate with no need for irrigation or chemicals.

Bamboo fabric is more breathable than cotton, and more absorbent. It’s hypoallergenic, naturally antibacterial, softer to the touch, and thermal regulating.

Body Peace use this fabric to create elegant, comfortable clothing that flatters all shapes while limiting its impact on the natural world.

“Once you feel for yourself how luxuriously soft it is you’ll want to wear nothing else,” she said.

Inspired by beauty, nature and peace of mind, Anna injects all these aspects into her business and design.

Her main line has been so successful, she’s currently working on a bamboo denim range and her own collection of bedding.

This stunning range of wearable luxury will be showcased on stand 2610 at Fashion Exposed from 25-27 August at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

Improving energy efficiency is a central element of the Australian Government’s Clean Energy Future package because it can help businesses save money on their operating costs while also lowering Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.

As a result of the Federal Government’s Commitment, the TCF Australia ONLINE ENERGY EFFICIENCY Training & Mentoring Project is able to offer an extensive range of specialist energy efficiency services to small businesses in the fashion, textile, clothing, footwear, leather (TCF) creative, and associated industries across Australia.

As a result of the Federal Government’s Commitment, the TCF Australia ONLINE ENERGY EFFICIENCY Training & Mentoring Project is able to offer an extensive range of specialist services to small businesses in the fashion, textile, clothing, footwear, leather (TCF) creative, and associated industries across Australia.

TCF will be offering FREE mentoring on energy efficiency on stand 1800 during Fashion Exposed from August 25-27 at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

For a preview of the service they’ll offer, we asked them for a selection of quick, easy and cost effective ways to reduce your heating, cooling, lighting and office energy usage.

Heating and air-conditioning

The good news is that significant savings can be achieved with simple adjustments in the way the equipment is used. E.g. set thermostat to 24 degrees when cooling and 20 degrees when heating, use fans when possible, and keep systems well maintained.

In addition, install window tinting, insulate and install high star rating inverter style air-conditioning units.

Lighting

Lighting accounts for a significant portion of energy costs in TCF businesses and is one of the easiest areas in which you can save energy and money.

Tips include installing sensors in low usage areas, painting walls and ceilings in light colours and replacing all old-style incandescent lighting.

Office process and other equipment

Switch equipment off when it’s not in use, put equipment on energy saving mode, buy 5 star rated equipment when upgrading.

Some of the top tips for TCF businesses in particular include:
•	Air-conditioning system adjustments
•	Fluorescent lighting upgrades
•	Hi-bay light upgrades

To make sustainable changes to your energy practices build an energy efficient culture, start small and aim high!

Holmes & Fallon winter 2014 collection preview

The way you look can change your mood!

This philosophy rings true at HOLMES & FALLON.

They love to make their customers feel their best. Whether it’s chic, fashion or casual styles you’re after, their range has something to suit all body shapes and personalities.

Customers needn’t be worried about their imperfections, a Holmes & Fallon long top with a relaxed shape will camouflage rounded tummies and bottoms. Tunic tops are the perfect casual solution.

Their formal outfits are perfect for the office, with a wide range of tops and blouses suited to the corporate life.

Whether it is summer, fall or winter, they offer an exciting range of clothing that will make customers look good in all seasons.

We caught up with the Holmes & Fallon team to learn a little about the history behind this successful brand before they showcase the new range at Fashion Exposed from 25-27 August at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

How did it all start? Tell us the history of your company.

The ‘HOLMES & FALLON’ Label entered the fashion market in 2009. With more than 20 years of experience in the business we wanted to create a label suitable for the 30 plus market.

We understand that we don’t all have perfect bodies but we still want to look and feel gorgeous and enjoy whatever body shape we have been blessed with. This is why we have created a label that offers quality garments at reasonable prices. Each piece has been specially designed with a little extra detail to make you feel special.

We are confident and proud to know that our customers enjoy and love our product as they keep coming back to us.

What’s the best part about working in the fashion industry?

The ever-changing fashion market keeps us happy and inspired and we pass this on to our customers.

What inspires you? How does this influence your design/business?

To see our customers enjoy wearing our label.

Are you working on any special projects/ranges/collections at the moment?

Winter 2014 just completed and cannot wait to show it!

What kind of materials do you source for your product range? Why?

High quality variety of fabrics. To suit everyone.

What can we expect to see when visiting your stand at Fashion Exposed?

Lots of variety. Great prices. Our current Summer 2013 range with stock available for immediate delivery. Plus our new Winter 2014 range. Don’t forget our delicious handmade chocolates for our beautiful customers.

Visit Holmes & Fallon on stand 3420 to take up their offer of a free garment with show orders over $500.

By Daisy Donnelly

When it comes to promoting a brand, Keeping up with the Kardashians is far from easy! The reality stars are a marketing force to be reckoned with. But when they wanted to make sure their clothing and accessories range was seen by all the right people in Australia, they chose Fashion Exposed as the place to do it.

As Bruno Schiavi, CEO of Jupi Corp which works closely with the famous sisters to produce and retail the Kardashian Kollection, says, “I was approached to exhibit at Fashion Exposed and looking into it, the trade event seemed the perfect opportunity to expand Kardashian Kollection in Australia where the denim, jewellery, sunglasses and lingerie has already proven a success.”

And it seems he was right. “The response was incredible,” enthuses Jupi sales manager Pina Pirello Sillaro. “We showcased Kardashian Kollection handbags, hosiery, sunglasses, jewellery, shoes and denim, as well as beautiful kaftan and swimwear label Lisa Kelly and new label Piju. The Kardashian Kollection was really well received as were our other brands.

“We also opened our first sales showroom in Sydney the day after Fashion Exposed and we were able to drive new business through the doors. Having the chance to showcase new product lines to buyers at Fashion Exposed was so valuable.”

So with thousands of potential new customers under one roof, how did they ensure they got their attention?

“We made sure that our stand reflected our company values and brand look and feel,” says Pina. “We created a shopping experience with fabulous décor and furniture for customers and that worked.”

And what is it that makes Fashion Exposed such an unmissable opportunity?

“Driving new business, creating sales and opening new relationships all make featuring at Fashion Exposed extremely worthwhile,” says Pina. “It is the perfect opportunity to showcase the diverse and incredible brands that Jupi Corp have to offer.”

Adds Bruno, “This event allows us to reach a greater number of buyers in one spot.”

With a little help from mum, Adelaide designer Ching Lai launched her debut label, Juicy Peach in 2005.

Since then, the label has grown significantly and mum is permanently based in Hong Kong where she liases daily with Ching to assist with manufacturing and fabrics – something she clearly enjoys.

“I love the texture of silk and chiffon, the feel of luxury and I find a lot of brands out there are very expensive specially silk,” she said. “That’s why I want to do something that’s more affordable and still good quality.

“Most of my designs are very simple and feminine, I love summer and I love designing summer beach dresses as well as garden party dresses.”

So how does she transfer these luxury silks into design?

“Sometime when I look at a fabric and the patten I already have an image in my head, then I will start a simple drawing,” she said.

“Then I will get the sample made from that and I’ll keep changing it until I think it looks prefect to me. After that I start making it into different sizes and colour to sell them at my shop in Adelaide.

“Most of my styles are very soft and light, perfect for the beach and summer, so I find Adelaide is not big enough. I want more people to see my designs.”

With a name like Juicy Peach, we had to ask what the inspiration was behind it.

“The name… I can’t really tell you much because when I first opened juicy peach, I just wanted a name that would make people stop and look, something that people can remember,” she said.

“When I first opened the store I didn’t think it could go this far, I just love what I do now.”

From just a small idea, Juicy Peach has grown into a burgeoning fashion label and Ching Lai will showcase the stunning new silk and chiffon dress collection at Fashion Exposed for the first time in Melbourne.

“Sometimes I have customers from the Gold Coast and they absolutely love my dress designs – I think because of the weather there – so I’m hoping by having a presence at Fashion Exposed I will get more people from different states,” she said.

With Fashion Exposed on the agenda, there’s an exciting future ahead.

“I would love to do more in dresses and I’m hoping if I get more people liking what I do, it will really give me motivation to do different things,” she said. “Maybe doing more things for the Australian winter.

“At the moment I’m working at the store as well, so hopefully in the future I can afford to just do the design. Then I won’t need to work as retail because that really takes up a lot of my design time.”

View the Juicy Peach collection on stand 3016 during Fashion Exposed from 25-27 August at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

With her native French background, it’s little wonder Alexandra Yadi’s designs have a retro romantic feel.

Yadi’s ready-to-wear brand, Milk and Roses combines colourful fresh prints with a touch of sexy bohemian chic inspired by her travels and love for vintage.

She designs by her motto of “a good fit is the therapeutic way to feel beautiful” and it seems to be a successful recipe.

Milk and Roses is designed around the philosophy that a woman should have everything she needs with just one or two pieces.

Each design offers women an `essential piece’ that can be converted to day or night. The unique mix of delicate silks with lace and sequin appliques means its equally a light and comfortable look by day or a touch of effortless glamour for evening.

These clothes are fresh and light in design, easy to wear by day and retro chic with a sexy French touch by night.

Alexandra Yadi started the Bali based label in 2008, having previously worked as a production agent in Bali from 2001. Her first son, Louka, remains the initial inspiration for the label. When he was 4 years old, Alexandra struggled to find clothes that would fit him, which brought about the decision to start the label.

Initially designing children’s wear only, Alexandra soon started to feel that she wanted something more, and in 2009 she began work on the womenswear line. In 2010 she opened her boutique in Oberoi, Bali and has never looked back.

Alexandra loves everything Retro, finding inspiration for her designs from old French lace to printed flowers. This has resulted in a quality line of fashionable women’s clothing that features a touch of southern French styling in luxurious fabrics such as silk, linen and organic cotton. Each are set in beautiful soft tones, creating an elegant sensual feeling and look.

Alexandra also likes to add lace and use different techniques of washing and dying to achieve a different look to her collections.

Milk & Roses is growing rapidly and is now stocked in selected boutiques around Australia.

Trends are a fickle fashion, style is forever.

But there’s no reason you can’t indulge in a new fad you love. And a new accessory is the simplest way to update your look.

NEWTOWN BLONDE is a new bag and accessory company with a fun and flirty feel to it.

Founded by retail store owner, Lisa Furnari, NEWTOWN BLONDE caters to a niche in the market for quality clutches, bags and accessories that reflect the current trends at an affordable price.

With the benefit of being able to sell the range herself in store – Lisa has a great understanding of what works, what customers are looking for and at what price.

NEWTOWN BLONDE reflects Lisa’s love for clutches and alternative options to the classic handbag. She personally spent many months travelling and sourcing the right pieces for the range.

The collection includes some beautiful handmade leather pieces, fashion jewellery and some on-trend fashion pieces for the upcoming season.

With sourcing agents in India and Indonesia, NEWTOWN BLONDE can turn product around within four weeks and be onto trends as soon as they appear overseas and locally.

Visit 4Threads Fashion Agency to view the NEWTOWN BLONDE range on stand 3810 during Fashion Exposed.

Melbourne School of Fashion, business graduate and creative director, Geneva Caldwell has created an extensive range of jewellery whilst using her eye for fashion when travelling and sourcing designs.

The Ichu range is inspired by international trends, travel and `a need for the unattainable’. In this plight, her Ichu designs have become synonymous for style and quality. Each piece is produced in Mexico using the highest quality 925 sterling silver.

Geneva drew on the brand’s Mexican heritage to found the name Ichu which refers to its versatility and creativity. A perfect analogy to the jewellery’s free-spirited aesthetic.

Devoted to maintaining the highest standards in style, it’s little wonder celebrities such as Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Erin McNaught and Danni Minogue are fans.

In 1996, a collaborative vision brought two designers, Joy Liakis and Natalie Fowler together during their studies in Fashion Design at RMIT and McCabe Academy.

United in their love of historical design and modern innovative fashion, (they were especially inspired by the art of corsetry), the duo embarked on a wonderful journey across 17 years under their own vintage-inspired label, Vicious Venus.

The girls are passionate about empowering women of all ages to enhance their own natural beauty with the best of vintage styling. Specialising in sophisticated classic clothing they are committed to creating original vintage inspired contemporary dresses, corsets and separates that celebrate the female form.

Dedicated to reviving the golden age of Hollywood glamour when curves were not a sin, Vicious Venus designs are always flattering, feminine and honour a woman’s independent spirit which never goes out of style!

We took five with the Vicious Venus designers to talk inspiration, the story behind the name, and exhibiting the range at upcoming Fashion Exposed Melbourne.

Where do you source your inspiration? And how do they drive you and influence your design?

Old Hollywood films and glamour, vintage clothing and images we’ve collected over the years. Looking back over the ground breaking designers like Chanel, Dior, Vionnet, Balenciaga, Mugler, Galliano, Gaultier, Westwood… I could go on!

The intricacy of design and detail of past fashions is inspiring in itself and translating that into more wearable fashion for today is very rewarding. The availability today of high quality innovative stretch fabrics also greatly influences the execution of our work.

How do you transfer these inspirations into design? Talk us through your design process from drawing board to in-store/online?

Inspiration is a maddening muse! Often I find myself suddenly awake at 3am reaching for the sketch pad beside my bed to capture an idea before it vanishes in the cold hard light of day! Both Natalie and I live and breathe each one of our designs. Vintage market hunts are a favourite and a treasure trove of inspiration, along with something as simple as the colour palette of an Autumn day or a beautiful fabric which can dictate the evolution of a design.

We always begin with a sketch and if we are particularly lucky, a special vintage piece to draw inspiration from. We then take into consideration the demands of a day in our modern life and create our designs to make them wearable yet still retaining a high level of detail.

Drafting a pattern, we make a garment toile. And from here it is altered for fit and style until we are satisfied with the final product. Our tailor then manufactures our samples so we can finalise production. Manufacturing a small run, we then test the reaction of the public in the store.

Can you tell us the story behind the name?

All those years ago, our passion revolved around a merging of traditional corsetry and punk ideals and so the vision of Vicious Venus was born. As we have evolved so has the concept.

It invokes images of strength as well as classical beauty, which pretty sums up our philosophy.

You will exhibit the brand at Fashion Exposed trade event, why did you choose this event and what do you hope to gain? Tell us what visitors can expect to see when visiting your stand.

We chose Fashion Exposed because we believe it is the best forum to showcase our work to the appropriate audience: buyers serious about stocking classic, quality pieces in small runs. As we appeal to up market boutiques, Fashion Exposed is the most appropriate exhibition to attract these buyers.

We have visited the trade show in past years buying for our boutique and have always been impressed by the high quality of exhibitors involved. We hope to gain more stockists with the aim of inspiring women to embrace their curves and look stunning in our vintage inspired clothing.

Without giving too much away, we have a beautiful stand planned, it will be a stage to show off our garments to their utmost potential with a touch of 50’s whimsy!

What’s in store for the future – where do you see the brand heading?

We love what we do and the source of our inspiration is endless. Our classic styles make up the core of our product range, but as we inject new designs into the catalogue every quarter you can expect a plethora of new designs every year.

We aim to clothe women of all sizes and currently our range goes up to size 22. Our customers LOVE this as the dresses not only fit, but flatter.

We eventually plan to broaden our range to include more cots, suits and tailored pieces in keeping with our classic styling. Upwards and onwards!

It’s almost winter, but before you groan at the thought, we pulled together some stylish winter inspirations to look forward to as the cool change sets in.

Winter doesn’t have to be all grey skies and no sun, you can have fun with a new wardrobe to make life interesting.

Here’s some of our favourite looks and style tips for the new season.

Do invest in a 3/4 length coat in a classic shade, preferably grey, white or black. We promise you’ll never look back.

If the white on white trend is a little too much for you, then at least invest in a white/cream knit. Not only is it warm, the white colour brightens your face in the dull winter light.

Layer, layer and more layers are required to withstand the bitter winds that whip through the winter season. And it’s fun creating new lengths and playing around with various fabrics.

Be sure to buy a beanie, not only do they keep your head warm, but they’ve remained a street style star staple for a few seasons now.

If there’s a time of year when you should wear colour, it’s definitely winter. And there’s not enough of it. Be bold and strike out from the norm in a bright winter coat. Love this cerulean blue.

Invest in a fur collar. It is a simple update to your winter look, great over a simple white tee or a luxe addition to a coat or jacket. And of course we always recommend faux fur fashion.

Try new styles like a cape or a coat with cape like sleeves. It adds a new and interesting detail.

Former Vogue Australia fashion editor, Naomi Smith has impeccable taste and this outfit is a perfect example. Love the longer length of this winter skirt worn with mid-calf leather boots. Chic.

Their name isn’t glamourous at all, but snoods are incredibly warm and are a great casual addition to your daily wardrobe.

And this certainly won’t fare well with everyone, but try wearing a skirt over leather pants or jeans. Sometimes wearing jeans everyday is a little boring, so change it up. This look is especially favoured towards the end of the season when you’re wishing for summer but it’s still weeks away.

And finally, who could do a winter styling report without mentioning the humble scarf. It is often neglected but this season, invest in something different, a few colours, different sizes, textures and knits. It’s a simple, cost-effective way to change up your daily look.

And if all else fails, make like the French and opt for classic black on black. Chic, timeless and current all in one. Can’t go wrong.
