Meet the DEBUT designer: Sky Haylock, Aponi

Yesterday we met Debut designer Edwina Sinclair of SOOT, but with twelve designers set to (pardon the pun) debut at Fashion Exposed we have to speak to one more, Sky Haylock of Aponi who has studied at Central St Martins in London and worked for Lisa Ho.

What does it mean to you, to be a Debut Sydney 2011 Finalist?
It’s really a privilege to be chosen as a debut finalist. It’s been such a great opportunity to have the support, encouragement and publicity from a major fashion trade show. I’ve grown and learnt as a designer. It’s made me examine the business side of fashion and not just focus on the creative process.

Tell us a little about your design background:
Starting out I studied for three years at Ultimo T.A.F.E. heading towards a career in theatre costume. While working and travelling overseas I enrolled in a design workshop at Central St Martins in London. Inspired by fashion I continued on to study at FBI College, Sydney. Next I gained insight and experience working at Lisa Ho in production, I then went on to complete my Advance Diploma in Fashion Design at St George T.A.F.E.

Tell us about your new collection:
Gorgeous silk prints in osmosis and blue rose, smooth, soft bamboo jersey, French striped Lycra, have all inspired my new collection. Bold blues, ivory, jet-black, and soft grey provide a classic yet modern colour palette. Aponi provides an effortless, easy to wear woman’s resort collection. Featuring relaxed dresses, swimwear, comfortable mix and match pieces with art, travel and nature being major themes to the collection.

What is your biggest achievement so far?
Design wise being a finalist in fashion competitions is always a high point and getting through all my study comes close, but my biggest achievement so far is starting up my own label.

Where do you hope to be in 5 years?
In 5 years I would love to be designing in Australia and travelling overseas. Growing a successful business would be wonderful. I like to keep an open mind when it comes to the future creative possibilities.

If you could dress anyone (celebrity, friend, girl on the street) who would it be?
Blake Lively from Gossip Girl, she has great energy and a beautiful smile. Kate Moss would also be amazing.
