NYFW Autumn Winter hair trends: The `undone’ look

Phillip Lim AW 13/14 NYFW

Altuzarra

Looking `undone’ sounds like the opposite of what you’d want to achieve. But before alarm bells start ringing, hear us out on this one because when done well, the `undone’ look can be a seriously sexy hairstyle that takes minimal effort.

It’s all about getting the right product.

This stripped-back appeal dominated the beauty looks at NYFW bringing the `undone’ style back into vogue for Autumn Winter 13/14.

Still not sure? Take style notes from Kate Moss and Alexa Chung who live by the `I just woke up like this’ hair motto.

To get the low down on the latest beauty trend, we asked Brett Albury Director of SUKI PADDINGTON along with ELEVEN Australia who are the Fashion Exposed Live Look Book sponsors for the upcoming Sydney 10-12 March event.

“The ‘undone’ look is a reflection of the ‘grunge’ trend that was very popular at both New York and London fashion weeks,” he said.

“With a nod to the ‘90’s and influences of the music of Nirvana and Garbage, this hair trend has a modern twist. Instead of the ‘dirty’ look of 90’s grunge the hair is clean and with a healthy shine, not the dry, beachy look of past seasons.”

Proenza Schouler AW 13/14

Do you think it’s still a result of fashion’s obsession with the model-off-duty look? What is the appeal?

Certainly the designers are influenced by their muses and with social media we are seeing more and more of the models off the runway. The way they style themselves outside of work definitely will influence us and encourage us to emulate their looks.

Sure this `hot messy’ `bed hair’ kind of style looks good on gorgeous models styled by professionals, but how will this look translate off the runway?

It’s not just about getting out of bed and heading out the door with this trend. It does take some preparation and styling to get it right and not look like you just don’t care.

The hair needs to be looked after with using the right shampoo, conditioner and leave-in products that create shine and give the hair a weightless feel if you have fine hair, or control if your hair is thick/coarse.

Preen

What are some of the products you need to achieve this look? It seems like the models have very natural, healthy hair? Is there a treatment that can help achieve this look minus the frizz?

ELEVEN AUSTRALIA MIRACLE HAIR TREATMENT is the best!

It is a lightweight, leave-in cream that nourishes the hair without weighing it down. It moisturises and protects the hair from UV and adds the perfect amount of natural shine. Because it is absorbed into the hair you are left frizz free all day!

Of all the NYFW shows, which made your top 5 for the best hair? Why?

When looking at the top five hair looks we think about what would the ‘suki’ girl wear, so here are our top 5 picks;

1) Marc Jacobs – We love the nod to the return of the mullet with a retro twist as seen on our favourite Aussie model, Ruby Jean Wilson.

2) Alexander Wang – The beautiful sleek low ponytails are definitely a suki signature look, timeless and perfect with his high fashion sports’ looks.

3) Naeem Khan – Amazing finger waves which were bought into a low bun were perfection and are the ultimate in sophistication.

4) Prabal Gurung – messy up-do’s that look effortless, stylish and fashion forward at the same time.

5) Calvin Klein – low side parts and the `undone’ look done with minimalist precision just like the clothes.

The latest hair craze sweeping the fashion world is `the Karlie’, with everyone from fashion editors to models going for the `chop’ a la Catherine McNeil – what is your take on this new cut? And what’s your advice for those considering it?

We love the ’ Karlie’. Hair has either been long or a pixie cut for a while now, so it’s great to see a cut that can be adjusted to suit any face shape.

If you are considering going for the ‘Karlie’ make sure your hairdresser takes your face shape into consideration when personalising the look. The length of the layers will make a huge difference to the suitability.

If you have a long face, face-framing layers beginning around the nose or higher will instantly lift the face.

For round faces a long fringe that sweeps at around the cheekbones will make the face appear more oval and add interest to the cut.

A wild splash of prints

During the hippie era of 1974, Nava and Felix Kingston took a backpacker holiday through India and fell in love with the beautiful printed, patchwork cotton and cheesecloth Indian dresses.

These dresses became the inspiration behind their own label, Black Plum. Fast track to modern day and their label is still going strong with their daughter, Natalie joining the creative team.

Their inspiration has also moved on from India with fabrics and ideas being sourced from France to Italy, as well as European fashion catwalks and the creative minds of their designers.

The Black Plum design team create all their own prints and embroideries on top of the gorgeous textures of fabrics and trims they source elsewhere. They create collections to work as themes for styled outfits specifically with the Black Plum customer in mind.

And the name? Well it is of course from the delicious fruit. The designers were inspired after eating a Black Plum during the summertime.

Black Plum will showcase their new collection at Fashion Exposed from 10-12 March at the Sydney Exhibition Centre, after receiving positive feedback from their first appearance at Fashion Exposed Melbourne last year.

Expect a wild splash of prints and fantastic new designs on stand 2828.

The Black Plum and Ice Express brands have been growing from strength to strength even in these tough times. These affordable ranges provide cutting edge and commercial, contemporary styling using top quality natural fabrics.

There is so much variety within the ranges as well as sizes available from 10 to XXL.

Don’t miss them!

The hot parasol trend keeping Aussie women cool this summer

A hot new trend is hitting beaches, the race track and every outdoor event this summer – the sun parasol is back with a vengeance.

After cocooning itself away for the past few centuries, the dusty, lacy, outdated parasol has transformed into a stylish, modern and classy accessory. Australian brand Sunbella is bringing the parasol into the 21st century, with sleek lines, hot new colours and 98% UV protection.

Designed and owned by an Australian mum and daughter team, the range of Sunbella parasols have been developed specifically for the Australian climate. Sunbella parasols have the highest possible UPF rating, wind vents for breezy days and, most importantly, are designed to look good.

Jillian Intini and daughter Casey Bryden designed and created Sunbella, seeing a need to help people soak up and enjoy the beautiful Australian sun in a healthy and stylish way.

“The Australian Cancer Council states that skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers and between 95% and 99% of skin cancers are caused by the sun. We love our outdoor Australian lifestyle, and we want to help people embrace it without exposing themselves to harmful rays unnecessarily.”

“The successful launch of our product this summer is proof that Australian women are ready to embrace an attractive form of sun protection. We have been thrilled with the response so far.” says Jillian.

“The Sunbella provides greater protection than a hat and does not destroy your hairstyle or makeup. It allows you to participate in a variety of outdoor activities which extend into an evening event without having to worry about messing up your appearance. We believe itʼs possible to be sun smart and still look good. ”

The Sunbella is the only product of its kind; combining fashion and sun protection to create the perfect accessory for a day at the races, the beach or an outdoor wedding. The Sunbella comes into itʼs own at the beach – its unique handle secures into the sand, giving hands-free shade for the face.

Sunbellaʼs are available in white, watermelon or ocean.

See the complete Sunbella range on Stand 4118 during the Bags & Accessories Fair co-located with Fashion Exposed from 10-12 March at the Sydney Exhibition Centre.

The face of Australian retail is changing. In fact, it’s not just us. It’s a global retail phenomenon. The integration of online, both e-comm and m-comm with shoppers getting social, there’s so much more to being a retailer today than ever before.
