Melbourne 2012 DEBUT winners, APOM – A part of me

Heading out on your own in a competitive industry can be a daunting prospect for any young entrepreneurial creative. But what if the industry gave you a leg up?

The Fashion Exposed DEBUT competition has played a crucial role in supporting Australia’s emerging fashion designers by exposing their range to thousands of potential buyers, key retailers and media.

Melbourne labels Limedrop and Alexi Freeman both launched their debut collections via the design competition and each have gone on to become successful fashion businesses with international appeal.

The year’s Fashion Exposed Melbourne winner, APOM – A Part of Me recently joined forces with the Sydney DEBUT winner, BRKICH at the So:Me pop-up space in South Melbourne, as well as selling their range on The Grand Social.

Introduced in Sydney 2006 and instantly celebrated, Debut has quickly earned its reputation as the prestigious industry entry platform and design competition for new fashion and accessory labels at FASHION EXPOSED.

Anticipating its 15th season and celebrating over 160 labels launching their fashion profile at Debut, including Trimapee, Since Grey, Kuwaii, Donna Sgro, as well as last season’s winners Brkich and Ginny & Jude Designs… Debut is the place to be at FASHION EXPOSED – Australasia’s premier fashion trade event co-located with Bags & Accessories and Australian Shoe.

The focus in Sydney 2013 is on Spring/Summer and applications in the categories apparel and accessories are now welcome.

Applications close Friday 30 November 2012 at 5pm AEST. Don’t miss it!

Transitioning the must-have leather trend into your summer style….

DO invest in a leather mini or pencil skirt

The must-have leather look refuses to budge from the top of the trends hit list. In fact it is so highly covetable by the fash pack, designers have had to incorporate the luxe bovine fabric into their spring summer ranges.

But leather in summer I hear you ask? Yes it certainly sounds like madness, but believe it or not, fashion’s much-loved material is here to stay all summer long.

That doesn’t mean you need to sweat for vanity however, there are plenty of ways to incorporate leather into your wardrobe and still look and feel cool.

SAY YES to leather shorts

THROW a leather vest or harness over a tee

FIND a summer dress shape in leather fabric

INVEST in a leather tee

Jackets as capes…

Have you noticed magazine editors and street style icons wearing their jackets as capes lately?

It seems putting your arms inside your blazer or coat sleeves is so last season and leaving it hanging from your shoulders is contemporary chic.

Even Net-a-Porter noted it as an emerging street trend in the current edition of their online magazine…

What do you think of the jacket as cape look?

When in doubt, opt for black and white

Fashion trends are notoriously fickle. When you finally buy the industry’s latest buzz colour, you might only have the chance to wear it a couple of times before pastel is announced as `done’ and it’s all about brights now.

This is probably why the top magazine editors, buyers and stylists usually opt for a monochromatic palate, and black and white is the model-off-duty uniform.

Vogue Paris editor, Emanuelle Alt is consistently decked out in the chalky inky mix, often pairing a white blazer with black pants or vice versa. Fellow Vogue Australia senior fashion editor, Christine Centenera is rarely seen in anything but.

But if you’re feeling like this could get a little tired day in day out with the same two colours, make like Miranda and slick your lips with your favourite red hue.

Is black and white your staple go-to? or do you crave colour?

Spring 13 Trend Spotlight: Ruffles

Images via NowFashion; Style.com

Reminiscent of a Spanish flamenco performer, exaggerated ruffles have been a major feature for Spring 2013 from Gucci to Givenchy.

It was overtly sexy at Balenciaga with a super thigh high split skirt that featured stiff ruffles taken from a Cristobal dress circa 1968.

Gucci went ultra glam with soft, wave like ruffles that almost floated across the body and arms, from luxurious floorlength evening wear to chic casual dresses for that cool cocktail party by the pool in Monaco.

But at Paris Fashion Week today, Givenchy gave the ruffle a gothic touch in sheer organza and heavy silks in a monotone palate.

What do you think of the ruffles trend?
