VM EXPOSED: Attract, Engage & Motivate Sales

Fashion Exposed chats with Megan Tregilgas to re-discover the art of visual merchandising and discover how to attract, engage and motivate your customer to maximise sales.

Megan Tregilgas of Visual Metier presents the key principles of VM at Fashion Exposed, shares common mistakes and shows how to execute stimulating VM displays on a tight budget, based on her own fashion retail background.

Her are her top tips;

1. Know your brand – Ensure you and your team understand the brand and it’s message and Visual Merchandising will come easily.

2. Plan – Planning your windows and store layouts in advance will allow you to put together a marketing calendar and make the most of seasonal events.

3. Educate and motivate you team so they are confident in changing displays to maximise sales

4. Customer Service – Visual Merchandising is good customer service. Clean well laid out stores, clear signage and pleasant looking accessorised displays all act as silent salespeople. Not only is it effective, but it can be cheap! Present your merchandise in a pleasing way and customers will be more tempted to spend.

5. VM 101 – Less is more – keep displays simple. Find a system that works. Use odd numbers opposed to evens. Even numbers cause symmetry which causes the eye to stop and not take in the whole picture. Repetition using identical elements repeatedly creates a powerful display.

6. Texture – Contrasting materials and interesting props stimulate your display into life. Attention to detail is key.

5 mins with Australian fashion journalist, Patty Huntington on the state of retail and it’s future

Having worked as fashion editor across several media platforms from print to television and online over the last 20 years, it’s suffice to say Sydney-based journalist, Patty Huntington has experienced, and covered, most of the significant changes that have impacted the Australian fashion industry and retail sector. From the days of bricks-and-mortar and in-store only service to the wide-spread digital revolution which she says has ‘ impacted pretty much every facet of society and business’.

Since 2006, Patty has worked in the new media space and launched one of the world’s first fashion blogs attached to a mainstream newspaper at smh.com.au. In 2007, she launched a new blog at news.com.au called Fully Chic, before eventually launching her own blog, frockwriter, whose stories are regularly picked up by Australian and international media outlets. Her site now attracts over 50,000 unique visitors and 100,000 page visits per month.

It’s Patty’s unique understanding of the traditional vs new media evolution, much of which was experienced through her own career, that has given rise to her new role as commentator.

In this exclusive interview with EXPOSED Online, Patty answers the tough questions about the state of the Australian retail sector. She says online is only part of the story as our prices are still more expensive and a combination of poor customer service and unimaginative visual merchandising are also major contributing factors to retail decline with `two thirds of consumers abandoning purchases because of a poor service experience in the past year’.

But above all, `Australians do want to spend money’ and she believes there are lots of ways retailers could make their in-store experiences more ‘special’.

Step into a world of style

Looking back at the history of the boat shoe, it’s clear why this practical footwear style eventually made it into popular culture. Also known as deck shoes or topsiders, the canvas or leather, rubber-soled styles were first invented in 1935 for modern boaters, loved for their highly durable designs that repelled water and didn’t slip.

Today, they are as fashionable on shore as they are off shore with a range of men’s high end fashion loafers and smart shoes on offer. The most unique styles come courtesy of FÅNE Footwear, offering comfort, durability and reliability fit for any occasion from the formal to casual.

FÅNE‘s design appeals to those with an eye for fashion and practicality, without putting a dent in the wallet.

We took five with FÅNE footwear director, Fane Levy to chat further on the history behind the brand; European inspiration trips; and the future.

Racewear in style…

Images via Pinterest

And we’re off… the Spring racing season will be in full swing for tomorrow’s Derby Day with elegant looking ladies lined up trackside in their hats and fascinators.

In a recent interview with Kate Waterhouse, Nerida Winter revealed the key looks for millinery this Spring is sculptural headpieces, similar to what’s been happening in fashion, lace and netting are also popular with straw hats.

The big no no for Spring is felt, as this is for the autumn/winter racing according to Ms Winter. For more advice, watch the interview at smh.com.au

We are particularly in love with the beautiful butterfly head piece below courtesy of Giambattista Couture.

When it comes to race day fashion, always remember appropriate hemlines ladies. And given the temperamental weather in Melbourne lately, it might be wise to invest in a cropped bolero or fur stole. Those winds are nasty, especially at the track.

Or go for a vintage look that’s timeless and forever classic. Isn’t she just stunning…

But in more important news, who will you be backing on the day? All tips are welcome, comment below or hit us up on Facebook.

Apom DEBUTs on The Grand Social…

Fashion Exposed DEBUT Apparel Award Winner, APOM is the collaboration between Kajsa Kvernmo and Kate Brook, “a partnership bound by a mutual affinity for handcrafted techniques, narrative and the natural world.”

Their unique style of vintage meets modern fusion has been widely embraced and applauded, but it’s their tribute to the artist aesthetic, honouring the artisan, that truly sets them apart. APOM promotes all those involved in the creation of each garment, from the artist who creates the prints, to the manufacturers that construct each piece locally in Melbourne.

“The aim is to empower the wearer to be informed on the life of a garment, to develop an awareness of the hand of the maker, and develop an attachment to the garment that transcends the notion of clothing itself.”

You can shop the above collection at The Grand Social HERE.

Catch our interview with APOM and fellow DEBUT award winner, BRKICH as they team up for So:Me Space in South Melbourne.
