Divine brilliance…

Creativity seems to flow steadily through the veins of Divya Rao’s family. “When I was about 14 years old I watched my mum and grandmother sew all the time and they were my true inspiration,” she says. “I learned sewing and embroidery from my grandmother and from then on, I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing fashion.”

As soon as she could, Divya enrolled into the National Institute of Fashion Design, India and experimented with fabrics until she reached a point where her designs outgrew her technical ability. She then enrolled into RMIT and it changed her life.

“I love the idea of all-encompassing craft that satisfies so many technical and creative aspects of designing,” she asys. “I have been following my nose and taken every opportunity given to me to the fullest and I simply want to enable myself to be on a continuous journey of creative learning.”

Divya’s self-titled label has been nominated as a finalist in the Debut competition at Fashion Exposed Melbourne. We took five with the emerging design star to chat further on her inspiration; the hand beading and embroidery in the debut collection; and the beautiful sanskrit translation to the label name.

Alex Flamingo rules the night…

Growing up among a family of dressmakers and designers, fashion runs through Alex Monte-Vasta’s veins. Fortunately her textile and design teachers recognised this talent early on and nurtured her passion through highschool.

Three years later, she enrolled in a fashion degree at the prestigious, Whitehouse Institute of Design that would see her walk away with some `pretty serious training’. Since graduation, Alex told Fashion Exposed Blog she has been non-stop designing, travelling and thinking about Alex Flamingo.

We are proud to announce her label, Alex Flamingo as a finalist in the Debut competition at the Melbourne Fashion Exposed trade event.

Read our intimate chat with the emerging designer where she reveals the rock’n'roll inspiration behind her `Rule the Night’ collection; the story behind the brand name; and the collection’s highlight pieces – think Iggy Pop pants and Jagger capes.

Majique in the mix at Fashion Exposed…

Christopher Esber for Majique Sword Brace Cuff: As seen at MBFWA 2012 will debut at Fashion Exposed via Ragtrader

It was difficult to miss the sleek sophisticated minimalism that was Christopher Esber at MBFWA. The entire fash pack was there including cult street fashion icon and Moda Operandi fashion director, Taylor Tomasi Hill. He is fashion’s latest golden boy.

But perhaps one of the most exciting stories to come out of his latest catwalk collection is the collaboration with local jewellery label Majique. The label joined forces with designer Christopher Esber for his highly anticipated MBFWA show earlier this year, to create a one-off accessory titled the ‘Christopher Esber for Majique Sword Brace Cuff’.

It is yet to hit the Australian market but following rave reviews post-show, both brands have decided to launch the product exclusively to wholesalers at Fashion Exposed autumn/winter trade event from 26-28 August at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

This will be the first place retailers can purchase the cuff, which will retail for approximately $100.

In an interview with Ragtrader, Majique director Larry van Balkon said he is pleased with the continuing success of the joint venture.

“After much interest was shown at MBFWA in the ‘Christopher Esber for Majique Sword Brace Cuff’, I’m so pleased Christopher has decided to extend our collaborative work,” he said.

“We thought Fashion Exposed was the perfect opportunity to introduce this piece to the marketplace as attendees would appreciate the relationship between the two brands. I look forward to a continued working affiliation with Christopher.”

Cruising into RESORT 2013…

Celine

With such a long break between the summer and winter seasonal shows, the fash pack welcome RESORT with eager anticipation. So what exactly is this collection anyway?

After a little research (via highly trusted source Wikipedia), resort collections were originally meant for wealthy customers or “more seasoned jet-setters” going on cruises (e.g. North Americans) or vacationing in the warm Mediterranean area (e.g. Europeans) during the winter months. Cruise collections offer light spring or summer clothing when the weather at the points of sale actually calls for winter apparel.

From a consumer point of view, they are a valuable distraction for those of us who have already bought their favourite pieces currently in-season, but are anxiously anticipating next season and can’t wait that long. But in fashion trade terms or as a retailer, resort is targeted at customers who have “finished buying their fall wardrobes and are looking ahead to vacations”.

So now you have received an education in resort and cruise collections, let’s get onto the fun part and take a look at some of Fashion Exposed Blog’s favourites so far.
