Melbourne 2012 DEBUT winners, APOM – A part of me

Heading out on your own in a competitive industry can be a daunting prospect for any young entrepreneurial creative. But what if the industry gave you a leg up?

The Fashion Exposed DEBUT competition has played a crucial role in supporting Australia’s emerging fashion designers by exposing their range to thousands of potential buyers, key retailers and media.

Melbourne labels Limedrop and Alexi Freeman both launched their debut collections via the design competition and each have gone on to become successful fashion businesses with international appeal.

The year’s Fashion Exposed Melbourne winner, APOM – A Part of Me recently joined forces with the Sydney DEBUT winner, BRKICH at the So:Me pop-up space in South Melbourne, as well as selling their range on The Grand Social.

Introduced in Sydney 2006 and instantly celebrated, Debut has quickly earned its reputation as the prestigious industry entry platform and design competition for new fashion and accessory labels at FASHION EXPOSED.

Anticipating its 15th season and celebrating over 160 labels launching their fashion profile at Debut, including Trimapee, Since Grey, Kuwaii, Donna Sgro, as well as last season’s winners Brkich and Ginny & Jude Designs… Debut is the place to be at FASHION EXPOSED – Australasia’s premier fashion trade event co-located with Bags & Accessories and Australian Shoe.

Apom DEBUTs on The Grand Social…

Fashion Exposed DEBUT Apparel Award Winner, APOM is the collaboration between Kajsa Kvernmo and Kate Brook, “a partnership bound by a mutual affinity for handcrafted techniques, narrative and the natural world.”

Their unique style of vintage meets modern fusion has been widely embraced and applauded, but it’s their tribute to the artist aesthetic, honouring the artisan, that truly sets them apart. APOM promotes all those involved in the creation of each garment, from the artist who creates the prints, to the manufacturers that construct each piece locally in Melbourne.

“The aim is to empower the wearer to be informed on the life of a garment, to develop an awareness of the hand of the maker, and develop an attachment to the garment that transcends the notion of clothing itself.”

You can shop the above collection at The Grand Social HERE.

Catch our interview with APOM and fellow DEBUT award winner, BRKICH as they team up for So:Me Space in South Melbourne.

WATCH Cecylia.com chat to DEBUT winners A PART OF ME at FASHION EXPOSED 2012

We are thrilled to announce the winners of the Fashion Exposed DEBUT competition are Melbourne label, A Part of Me.

APOM is a collaboration between Kajsa Kvernmo and Kate Brook, “a partnership bound by a mutual affinity for handcrafted techniques, narrative and the natural world”.

This short video shot by local style blogger and Fashion Exposed media partner, Cecylia.com discusses how the girls came to work together after graduating from the Whitehouse Institute; how each of the garments from the collection tell a story and are inspired by childhood storybooks; and their aim to make each piece from APOM connect with the wearer and the maker.

Their website states:

APOM likes to promote all those involved in the creation of each garment, from the artist who creates the prints, to the manufacturers that construct each piece locally in Melbourne.

The aim is to empower the wearer to be informed on the life of a garment, to develop an awareness of the hand of the maker, and develop an attachment to the garment that transcends the notion of clothing itself.

APOM stands for what the duo believes in. They want their clothes to become a part of the wearer and part of the APOM story.

Congratulations again to APOM for taking out the award for Best Apparel.

Thierry Mugler SS 2013 range to launch at Fashion Exposed

Thierry Mugler, the Designer, Photographer, Perfumer is overall a creative genius in the world of fashion and beauty. His early career began in the extravagant and opulent world of theatre and the arts. It was his drive to become a star in this magical world that influenced the 5 point asymmetrical star which now comes to represent the Thierry Mugler brand we know so well today.

Luxury, decadence and over the top design elements characterize his accessory collections, once again inspired by the bright lights of the stage and close clients Lady Gaga and Beyonce. The Spring Summer 13 collection has real star appeal! Sparkles, studs, bold colours, geometric designs and strong hardware features create a collection that is fun, striking and exceptionally directional.

The Thierry Mugler collection is launching for the first time in Australia with the Spring Summer 13 range on Stand 2810 at the Bags & Accessories Fair co-located with Fashion Exposed from this Sunday 26-28 August at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

The range consists of a wide variety of materials & designs which ensures a style & price for all fans of Thierry Mugler.

Simple Fashion. Simple Interiors. Simple Lifestyle.

Photography: Warren Jopson

Introducing White Label NOBA – a label born from the love of “simple, beautiful design and a dream to show the world that beauty and individual style is for everyone”. The label started in 2010 when Tracey Watkins, an interior designer frustrated with the lack of beautiful clothing for larger women, designed her own wedding dress and never looked back.

Tracey runs the label with a small team. From humble beginnings WLN has grown into a two-year-old company with 80 stockists nationwide and a fantastic local following with the brand.

Here is a sneak peek of the range which includes womenswear, homewares and children’s clothing before they debut at Fashion Exposed this Sunday at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. Read our interview with Tracey in this weeks’ edition of EXPOSED Online out Wednesday.

ELandTINO DEBUT at Fashion Exposed…

It starts out as a typical story of two young fashion students fusing their skills to create their own brand, but that’s where the stereotype ends. After sniffing out the fashion and culture in Melbourne, Elsje Jordan and Stephanie Malatino found a small crack in the retail rainbow and developed ELandTINO, a new genre of alternative evening wear.

The Australian-produced formal wear doesn’t have the flavour of mass production or imitation. It’s completely original. The girls have combined their differing design styles to produce both elegant and flattering gowns as an alternative to street wear.

They have steered clear of the shiny, tacky satins or unwearable ‘alternative’ pieces, to ‘create a harmony of classic unforgettable style complimented by fashion forward colours and genuinely unique embellishments.’

The girls have been chosen as finalists in the Melbourne DEBUT competition held during Fashion Exposed from 26-28 August.

We took five with the designer duo to chat further on their new label, the design inspiration and where they see the label headed in the future.

The cult of Cecylia

While we all love a fashion trend, there are some of us who transcend the `latest’ and see through `what’s hot’ to craft their own cult of cool. One such lady is Cecylia of Cecylia.com who has quickly risen to style blogger fame with her sartorial style choices and impeccable taste. It’s ladylike but never stuffy or conservative, and she always adds the Cecylia twist that can transform even the most simplest of pieces into something extraordinary and so signature Cecylia.

Just like this recent post titled `Black Cobra’ where she makes a pair of snakeskin print pants look casual and effortless on the streets of Melbourne, worn with a Sonya Kraan asymmetrical wool vest (Sonya is a former Fashion Exposed Debut finalist) and Tom Gunn heels.

We are proud to announce Cecylia.com as a key media partner for the Melbourne Fashion Exposed trade show held 26-28 August at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

Be sure to follow her on twitter and facebook during the 3-day event as she snaps her discoveries.

Majique in the mix at Fashion Exposed…

Christopher Esber for Majique Sword Brace Cuff: As seen at MBFWA 2012 will debut at Fashion Exposed via Ragtrader

It was difficult to miss the sleek sophisticated minimalism that was Christopher Esber at MBFWA. The entire fash pack was there including cult street fashion icon and Moda Operandi fashion director, Taylor Tomasi Hill. He is fashion’s latest golden boy.

But perhaps one of the most exciting stories to come out of his latest catwalk collection is the collaboration with local jewellery label Majique. The label joined forces with designer Christopher Esber for his highly anticipated MBFWA show earlier this year, to create a one-off accessory titled the ‘Christopher Esber for Majique Sword Brace Cuff’.

It is yet to hit the Australian market but following rave reviews post-show, both brands have decided to launch the product exclusively to wholesalers at Fashion Exposed autumn/winter trade event from 26-28 August at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

This will be the first place retailers can purchase the cuff, which will retail for approximately $100.

In an interview with Ragtrader, Majique director Larry van Balkon said he is pleased with the continuing success of the joint venture.

“After much interest was shown at MBFWA in the ‘Christopher Esber for Majique Sword Brace Cuff’, I’m so pleased Christopher has decided to extend our collaborative work,” he said.

“We thought Fashion Exposed was the perfect opportunity to introduce this piece to the marketplace as attendees would appreciate the relationship between the two brands. I look forward to a continued working affiliation with Christopher.”
