Cruising into COAST by Kate Campbell

With Queensland’s sun-soaked seascape as her backdrop, it’s little wonder the beach is the key inspiration behind Kate Campbell’s luxury label, COAST. Her casual yet sophisticated styles are a fusion of her love for the beach lifestyle and her overseas travel.

This aesthetic is realised in her current Wanderlust Resort 13 collection, featuring featuring feminine and floaty pieces in weightless silks and silk cotton blends that fit and flatter the body. The collection has earnt Kate a loyal following and a rising reputation as one of the most exciting, emerging designers to come out of Queensland.

COAST by Kate Campbell will showcase her new collection “Fruits of Paradise” at Fashion Exposed from 10-12 March in the Sydney Exhibition Centre.

We took five with the Gold Coast-based designer to chat further on the history behind the brand; how travel plays a large role in the COAST design; and her future plans of working with local artisans in India.

Brkich in the velodrome

Brkich shoot at the Brunswick velodrome

A chance encounter brought three emerging design talents together for one very fashionable celebration. Consecutive winners of the 2012 Fashion Exposed DEBUT Apparel Award – Brkich and Apom (A part of me) – happened to be placed side by side at the recent Melbourne trade event, but while good luck brought them together, a common passion for innovation and design inspired them to collaborate.

The two labels have paired up to collectively launch their Spring Summer 2012/13 ranges at the So:Me pop-up space in South Melbourne. Brkich will use the event to announce the official launch of her first formal collection, ‘Bright Smoke’.

The two exciting up-and-coming designers gave EXPOSED Online an exclusive preview and insight into their latest SS 13 collections before the So:Me pop-up launch; details on how their individual label aesthetic warrant a shared pop-up; and what lies ahead for the future.

Apom DEBUTs on The Grand Social…

Fashion Exposed DEBUT Apparel Award Winner, APOM is the collaboration between Kajsa Kvernmo and Kate Brook, “a partnership bound by a mutual affinity for handcrafted techniques, narrative and the natural world.”

Their unique style of vintage meets modern fusion has been widely embraced and applauded, but it’s their tribute to the artist aesthetic, honouring the artisan, that truly sets them apart. APOM promotes all those involved in the creation of each garment, from the artist who creates the prints, to the manufacturers that construct each piece locally in Melbourne.

“The aim is to empower the wearer to be informed on the life of a garment, to develop an awareness of the hand of the maker, and develop an attachment to the garment that transcends the notion of clothing itself.”

You can shop the above collection at The Grand Social HERE.

Catch our interview with APOM and fellow DEBUT award winner, BRKICH as they team up for So:Me Space in South Melbourne.

WATCH Cecylia.com chat to DEBUT winners A PART OF ME at FASHION EXPOSED 2012

We are thrilled to announce the winners of the Fashion Exposed DEBUT competition are Melbourne label, A Part of Me.

APOM is a collaboration between Kajsa Kvernmo and Kate Brook, “a partnership bound by a mutual affinity for handcrafted techniques, narrative and the natural world”.

This short video shot by local style blogger and Fashion Exposed media partner, Cecylia.com discusses how the girls came to work together after graduating from the Whitehouse Institute; how each of the garments from the collection tell a story and are inspired by childhood storybooks; and their aim to make each piece from APOM connect with the wearer and the maker.

Their website states:

APOM likes to promote all those involved in the creation of each garment, from the artist who creates the prints, to the manufacturers that construct each piece locally in Melbourne.

The aim is to empower the wearer to be informed on the life of a garment, to develop an awareness of the hand of the maker, and develop an attachment to the garment that transcends the notion of clothing itself.

APOM stands for what the duo believes in. They want their clothes to become a part of the wearer and part of the APOM story.

Congratulations again to APOM for taking out the award for Best Apparel.

ELandTINO DEBUT at Fashion Exposed…

It starts out as a typical story of two young fashion students fusing their skills to create their own brand, but that’s where the stereotype ends. After sniffing out the fashion and culture in Melbourne, Elsje Jordan and Stephanie Malatino found a small crack in the retail rainbow and developed ELandTINO, a new genre of alternative evening wear.

The Australian-produced formal wear doesn’t have the flavour of mass production or imitation. It’s completely original. The girls have combined their differing design styles to produce both elegant and flattering gowns as an alternative to street wear.

They have steered clear of the shiny, tacky satins or unwearable ‘alternative’ pieces, to ‘create a harmony of classic unforgettable style complimented by fashion forward colours and genuinely unique embellishments.’

The girls have been chosen as finalists in the Melbourne DEBUT competition held during Fashion Exposed from 26-28 August.

We took five with the designer duo to chat further on their new label, the design inspiration and where they see the label headed in the future.

Alex Flamingo rules the night…

Growing up among a family of dressmakers and designers, fashion runs through Alex Monte-Vasta’s veins. Fortunately her textile and design teachers recognised this talent early on and nurtured her passion through highschool.

Three years later, she enrolled in a fashion degree at the prestigious, Whitehouse Institute of Design that would see her walk away with some `pretty serious training’. Since graduation, Alex told Fashion Exposed Blog she has been non-stop designing, travelling and thinking about Alex Flamingo.

We are proud to announce her label, Alex Flamingo as a finalist in the Debut competition at the Melbourne Fashion Exposed trade event.

Read our intimate chat with the emerging designer where she reveals the rock’n'roll inspiration behind her `Rule the Night’ collection; the story behind the brand name; and the collection’s highlight pieces – think Iggy Pop pants and Jagger capes.
