1920s Elegance with Nomiki Glynatsis Couture…

Nomiki Glynatsis wants every woman to feel like a million dollars. Her couture jewellery collection is exquisitely hand crafted with elaborate beading in Swarovski crystals, fresh water pearls, sequins, specialty beads and vintage beads taking inspiration from the `ornate elegance and timeless appeal’ of the 1920s and 1950s. Each one-off piece is as unique as the individual wearer and a stunning compliment to her elegant couture evening gowns.

Having completed her Advanced Diploma of clothing, textiles and footwear at MSIT in 2008, Nomiki Glynatsis furthered her studies in the romantic city of Paris for three months in 2009. It was here where her passion was ignited, taking classes at the renowned ‘Ecole Lesage’ and participating in the ‘Paris American Academy’ Couture Intensive Workshop. That same year, her graduate collection starred on the live telecast runway of the NRA fashion awards and this launched a stunning career and the beginning of her self-titled label, Nomiki Glynatsis Couture.

Nomiki was a standout designer at the recent Fashion Exposed, Melbourne. We asked her how she fell into fashion, how she makes her designs stand out from the fashion pack, and what inspired her current Autumn/Winter 2012 Couture Jewellery Collection titled “Jewels of the Night”.

When did you first take up fashion design? Was it something you fell into or a natural progression from a lifelong passion?

I always loved art and craft as a child but it wasn’t until year 10 that I found my passion for fashion design. I did a short two-day workshop in fashion drawing over the holidays and then something inside me just clicked and I knew that fashion was my destiny.

What is the defining difference to your designs that make them stand out from the fashion pack?

Attention to detail and craftsmanship of the intricate hand-beaded embellishments on all my couture pieces.

How do you come up with your collection? What is the process from drawing board to finished product?

I have two different processes I use depending on whether I’m working on my jewellery or gowns. With the gowns it stems from inspiration, sourcing materials then designing with my materials on hand before going into production. Jewellery on the other hand also stems from inspiration but instead of sketching ideas I know what I want to achieve in my thoughts and begin to construct straightaway. Working with the beads and materials also somewhat defines the design process.

What are your biggest inspirations? From fashion to everyday?

Reminiscing of past decades and era’s are such strong influences in my inspiration as I often delve back into the 1920′s and 1950′s for an ornate elegance and timeless appeal. Art and nature are other inspirations I source from especially the impressionist style paintings as well as the shape, colour and overall beauty of flowers.

Where do you hope to see your label in the future?

My hopes are set in opening a charming flagship boutique in Melbourne as well as concentrating on breaking into the international market.

What can you tell me about the current collection?

Autumn/Winter 2012 Couture Jewellery Collection titled “Jewels of the Night” which will feature six looks comprised of hand beaded vintage lace necklaces, chandelier earrings, bracelets, rings and hair-clips incorporating a mixture of Swarovski crystals and pearls, vintage beads, sequins, buttons and laces sourced both from Paris and within Australia as well as fresh water pearls, metal beads and other various embellishments. There is also a story to the collection: Shimmering light reflects off the sparkle of her crystals and pearls under a moonlight night, the whisper of a gentle breeze carries the scent of her fragrance through the air, she is dressed in all her beauty and glory as she enters the room gracefully, a quietness befalls upon the crowd and in that moment she is absolutely captivating with an ethereal allure… this is to be an evening of elegance.

What are you designing now? can you give us a sneak peek?

I’m currently working on a private collection for a client so will have to keep it a secret for the time being!

You recently showed your collection at Fashion Exposed, what was the response to your collection?

I was quite encouraged with the positive feedback I received from Fashion Exposed. Most who came and saw my collection were blown away by the amount of detail and work that went into each piece, especially since I make everything myself. Other comments were also complimenting my display set up and look book.
