Melbourne 2012 DEBUT winners, APOM – A part of me

Heading out on your own in a competitive industry can be a daunting prospect for any young entrepreneurial creative. But what if the industry gave you a leg up?

The Fashion Exposed DEBUT competition has played a crucial role in supporting Australia’s emerging fashion designers by exposing their range to thousands of potential buyers, key retailers and media.

Melbourne labels Limedrop and Alexi Freeman both launched their debut collections via the design competition and each have gone on to become successful fashion businesses with international appeal.

The year’s Fashion Exposed Melbourne winner, APOM – A Part of Me recently joined forces with the Sydney DEBUT winner, BRKICH at the So:Me pop-up space in South Melbourne, as well as selling their range on The Grand Social.

Introduced in Sydney 2006 and instantly celebrated, Debut has quickly earned its reputation as the prestigious industry entry platform and design competition for new fashion and accessory labels at FASHION EXPOSED.

Anticipating its 15th season and celebrating over 160 labels launching their fashion profile at Debut, including Trimapee, Since Grey, Kuwaii, Donna Sgro, as well as last season’s winners Brkich and Ginny & Jude Designs… Debut is the place to be at FASHION EXPOSED – Australasia’s premier fashion trade event co-located with Bags & Accessories and Australian Shoe.

The focus in Sydney 2013 is on Spring/Summer and applications in the categories apparel and accessories are now welcome.

Applications close Friday 30 November 2012 at 5pm AEST. Don’t miss it!

Apom DEBUTs on The Grand Social…

Fashion Exposed DEBUT Apparel Award Winner, APOM is the collaboration between Kajsa Kvernmo and Kate Brook, “a partnership bound by a mutual affinity for handcrafted techniques, narrative and the natural world.”

Their unique style of vintage meets modern fusion has been widely embraced and applauded, but it’s their tribute to the artist aesthetic, honouring the artisan, that truly sets them apart. APOM promotes all those involved in the creation of each garment, from the artist who creates the prints, to the manufacturers that construct each piece locally in Melbourne.

“The aim is to empower the wearer to be informed on the life of a garment, to develop an awareness of the hand of the maker, and develop an attachment to the garment that transcends the notion of clothing itself.”

You can shop the above collection at The Grand Social HERE.

Catch our interview with APOM and fellow DEBUT award winner, BRKICH as they team up for So:Me Space in South Melbourne.

Colour me now… MSFW Spring Racing Fashions with David Jones…

Spring is officially in the air and already a kaleidoscope of colour is spinning its way into our wardrobes, getting us in the mood for the warm season ahead. And what better way to celebrate than with the Spring Racing fashions we can look forward to wearing track side.

With racing icon Gai Waterhouse in the front row, and hosted by fellow racing royalty, Emma Freedman along with former Miss Universe Australia and newly appointed Fashion and Social Ambassador for the BMW Caulfield Cup Carnival 2012, Jesinta Campbell, the David Jones MSFW Spring Racing fashion show proved its racing status before the models even hit their stride on the pop-up catwalk.

Samantha Harris opened the show in a classic Willow ensemble with orangeade accents and tweed pumps in a low kitten heel for added all day comfort. This was followed on by even more colour from Josh Goot’s spectacular floral shifts, to flouncy fluoro dresses and lace frocks in lemon-esque tones.

But the take away trends were the printed pant suit from an all over floral to simple black and white; and the 70s jumpsuit which has been given a modern reinvention with lace panel detailing and a sleeker fit by Australian favourites, Lover.

WATCH Cecylia.com chat to DEBUT winners A PART OF ME at FASHION EXPOSED 2012

We are thrilled to announce the winners of the Fashion Exposed DEBUT competition are Melbourne label, A Part of Me.

APOM is a collaboration between Kajsa Kvernmo and Kate Brook, “a partnership bound by a mutual affinity for handcrafted techniques, narrative and the natural world”.

This short video shot by local style blogger and Fashion Exposed media partner, Cecylia.com discusses how the girls came to work together after graduating from the Whitehouse Institute; how each of the garments from the collection tell a story and are inspired by childhood storybooks; and their aim to make each piece from APOM connect with the wearer and the maker.

Their website states:

APOM likes to promote all those involved in the creation of each garment, from the artist who creates the prints, to the manufacturers that construct each piece locally in Melbourne.

The aim is to empower the wearer to be informed on the life of a garment, to develop an awareness of the hand of the maker, and develop an attachment to the garment that transcends the notion of clothing itself.

APOM stands for what the duo believes in. They want their clothes to become a part of the wearer and part of the APOM story.

Congratulations again to APOM for taking out the award for Best Apparel.
